Marija Bistrica is one of the most important places of pilgrimage and Croatias main shrine to the Virgin Mary.
The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in the 14th century. Up to 600.000 people visit Marija Bistrica every year and many pilgrims from distant parts of the country make the long journey on foot.
The most important day in history of Marija Bistrica is October 3, 1998 when Pope John Paul II. visited this place of pilgrimage. More than 400.000 believers gathered in Marija Bistrica to see the Holy Father and hear him beatify Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac, the late archbishop of Zagreb.
